“Sogna come se dovessi vivere per sempre. Vivi come se dovessi morire oggi”. Quando muore in un incidente stradale, il 30 settembre del 1955, James Dean ha soltanto 24 anni: è sulla U.S. Route 466 al volante della sua Porsche 550 spyder, che lui stesso ha soprannominato “Little Bastard”. “Too fast to live / too young to die” come cantano gli Eagles. E il cattivo ragazzo più amato di Hollywood, un talento grezzo e assoluto, si trasforma istantaneamente in leggenda. Anzi, in icona. Gli bastano soltanto tre film, che gira in 15 mesi, e dove incarna sempre la figura del “ribelle”: a notarlo è Elia Kazan, che ne La Valle dell’Eden, gli affida il ruolo dell’inquieto Cal Trask. Grazie a questa interpretazione Dean è il primo attore nella storia ad ottenere una nomination postuma all’Oscar.

Ma è con il rebel without a cause Jim Stark in Gioventù bruciata che entra nell’immaginario collettivo e diventa il simbolo di una generazione: t-shirt bianca sotto al giubbotto, ciuffo sistemato a regola d’arte, sguardo intenso e corrucciato. E “quel” broncio.

La candidatura postuma da parte dell’Academy arriva anche per la sua ultima pellicola, Il gigante, dove l’attore è Jett Rink, bracciante povero ma ambizioso, al fianco di Rock Hudson e Liz Taylor.

Carismatico e cool, tormentato e ribelle ma anche sensibile e romantico, James Dean è la stella che è bruciata più in fretta nello star-system americano: “Sono convinto che avrò successo perché da un lato io sono come Montgomery Clift che dice ‘aiutami!’ e dall’altro lato sono come Marlon Brando che grida ‘vaffanculo!’… da qualche parte nel mezzo c’è James Dean”. E come ogni mito che si rispetti (e forse anche di più) con la sua vita spezzata, la carriera folgorante e il fascino rock ha avuto una grande influenza nella cultura, nel cinema e, ovviamente, nella musica.
