Viaggio in un campus estivo militare per giovani ungheresi

Máté Bartha, nato nel 1987, vive e lavora a Budapest con la fotografia e il film documentario. Con il suo progetto KONTAKT ha ricevuto il Capa Grand Prize Fellowship (2017) e il Robert Capa Grand Prize Hungary (2018).

Per questa serie l’artista si immerge in un campus estivo a tema militare organizzato dall’ Hungarian NGO chiamato “Honvédsuli” (Home Defense School).

Il campus è basato sull’insegnamento della disciplina, del patriottismo e dello spirito di squadra a ragazzi tra i 10 e i 18 anni, i quali devono per la prima volta nella loro vita affrontare responsabilità, aspettative e il convivere con altre persone, anche del sesso opposto.

I ragazzi si accampano all’aperto, imparano a non far spegnere il fuoco, fanno escursioni e cantano insieme. Attraverso le difficoltà fisiche del campus, come i piegamenti da fare come punizione per non aver rispettato le regole, o avanzare carponi nel fango, si forma un forte senso di comunità e con questa anche l’amicizia.

La maggior parte dei ragazzi non indossa uniformi al di fuori del campus. Alcuni di loro provengono da famiglie di militari, ma molti non vogliono proseguire per quella strada.

I bambini che hanno deciso di partecipare al campus perché gli piacciono i videogames di guerra, cambieranno idea dopo aver vissuto sulla loro pelle la realtà e le fatiche di questa vita. Alcuni sono stati mandati dai genitori che sentono di aver fallito con loro.

Questi bambini, una volta all’interno di questa comunità, spesso dicono di non aver mai ricevuto tante attenzioni in casa. Poi ci sono i ragazzi che provengono da ambienti poveri e per loro questa esperienza sarà la più formante per la loro identità.

Inizialmente a disagio nel vedere e vivere una piccola realtà dove bambini imparano ad usare armi seppure delle repliche, alla fine del percorso Bartha si ritrova a riconsiderare questa esperienza non solo dal suo primo punto di vista.
